Are MSK Australia Conference Expenses Tax Deductible? A Guide for Delegates.

Combining Professional Development with a Destination Conference

Attending a professional conference is a great way to develop new clinical skills, stay current with research, and connect with colleagues in your field.

Another advantage many clinicians don’t realise is that a large portion of the costs associated with attending a professional conference can often be tax deductible. When the primary purpose of travel is education, attending a destination conference can also be a tax-effective way to combine professional development with time away in an incredible location.

Many delegates choose to combine their CPD with a short break, making destination conferences a very efficient way to learn, travel and recharge while potentially claiming eligible conference-related expenses.

The Australian Tax Rules in Simple Terms

According to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), conference expenses may be tax deductible if the education maintains or improves the knowledge and skills required in your current job.

If the primary purpose of the trip is to attend the conference, it may be possible to claim conference-related expenses such as:

  • Conference registration
  • Travel to the event (flights, transfers, etc.)
  • Accommodation
  • Meals while staying away from home for the conference

If you extend your stay for personal travel, those additional days are generally considered private and cannot be claimed. However, the conference portion of the trip may still be deductible.

Why MSK Australia Uses a Half-Day Conference Format

MSK Australia conferences are designed to combine high-quality education with time to enjoy the destination.

Each day typically includes around four hours of focused teaching, allowing delegates to gain valuable CPD while still having time to relax, explore, and connect with colleagues.

International Delegates

Many clinicians attend MSK Australia events from around the world. In many countries, professionals who are self-employed, contractors, or running their own practice may be able to claim work-related education, conference registration, and associated travel expenses when the learning directly relates to their current professional practice or income-earning activities.

Tax rules vary between countries and between employees and self-employed professionals, so we recommend checking with a local accountant or tax advisor to confirm what may be deductible in your situation.

Important Disclaimer

Tax rules depend on individual circumstances. This information is intended as a general guide only. Always seek advice from your accountant or tax advisor before making a claim.
